This is The AfterLife. No hype or inflation of independent accomplishments, but a true look at what it takes to be successful in music today. We do not strive to be a made up faction of advertisement in pop-culture. We strive to live our lives everyday as the best day of our lives.
-Anyway October brought great highs and lows. We revel in the highs and either roll up and die, or learn from the lows. Lows are in the Lessons Learned this month. But we'll ride the high of opening for Brian VanderArk of the Verve Pipe until the next National Act Opening. An awesome showing from the Lake FX Radio crew, an oodle of friends and a great number of Newbies made the October 16 show with BVA a successful show. Jason had a chance to speak shortly 1 on 1 with Brian before the show regarding music and how to help oneself be successful in the business. Success being weighed, not by fame or salary, but by personal feeling of accomplishment. (Side Note: BVA's new disc 'Resurrection' compiles great personal songwriting and acoustically charged songs. http://bvamusic.com)
Website This month AfterNineRocks.com will be changing. Jason has hooked up With Ultra Entertainment (UE), a company based in Arizona, who will be taking over the website. They will help AfterNineRocks.com become more interactive, faster, and ultimately more personal between AfterNine and you. You'll be able to upload your personal pictures of show; chat online with others who follow what we are striving to accomplish; watch new video footage; and read the personal journal of AfterNine(like a mini-AfterLife). Currently Jason and UE are mailing back and forth approvals for the new website. If you'd like to visit the company to see what they'll be doing, you may click here - http://ultraentertainment.com.
AfterNine (the band) If you've been to the shows in Middleville, you have had the chance to see Jason playing with AfterNine as the full band. This version, 2.0, has been put together in spare time. Currently Jason, along with Jason Lanning on drums, is auditioning bass players. This week we look at one more to see if it's a fit. The goal is to have AfterNine as a three piece. This allows Jason to run his solo shows and have the key players to bring up for a fuller sound. The target is January to have a 3 hour show available to the Agent and the venues Jason books on his own.
Pushing the Business Along with UE taking over the website, they also have a booking department. This month, a cd was sent to the head of that department, as we strive to find more shows to play live. Cd's were also sent to Bieler Brother's Records (http://bielerbros.com), Takamine guitars (http://takamine.com/), and Gibson guitars (http://gibson.com) as we looking for sponsors, as well as any networking in the business.
Lessons Learned September was as awesome month for Jason as he was in NC, CT, NY and other states as well. The low we hit this month is realizing that we cannot rest ourselves on one company. With the agent booking no shows in October, Jason found himself in a bit if straits, as we waited for checks to come in from shows played in the previous month. The idea had originally been to book around the agent. But in waiting for shows, it seems we almost waited to long. Jason needs to continue booking and let the agent get what he can. We cannot rest our success on the shoulders of others. We need to make it happen for ourselves. You can't sit in the house and expect God to bring you groceries. We have been given the tools. Sure we can loan them out, but we can't stop using them ourselves. Having said that, AfterNine is also seeking work with Onesti Entertainment in Chicago and Bieler Brothers Records and Ultra Entertainment as stated above. Let's see if we can make this happen.
Street Team There are many of you who see something in Jason and AfterNine and would love to help perpetuate this, if you A)new what you could do and B)had the time to do it. With the new website comes a Street Team. This will allow the fans and friends of AfterNine to help in promotion. Jason will be working close with UE to help manage the Street Team. Currently, we are waiting for the website to get up before we begin working with the Street Team, but if you are interested in becoming a solid baffle for this journey that is AfterNine, please reply to this message, and we'll let you know what you can do to help...when we figure that out ourselves.
Song Spotlight Mirror Mirror (Me and Myself) - Jason Eller and Rick Boyd (Dec. 2001) Mirror, Mirror, on the wall Who's the fairest of them all? Tell me Gypsy can you foretell? Give me sight to these things that compel me
I see the reflection of my life I asked the mirror, and this was his reply
"Face to face and eye to eye I see the faces you try to hide. Face to face and eye to eye Step from the shadows and into the light" -- Poor man, poor man, why do you sleep In this jungle tapestry? Where's your horse, and where's your sword? Or is this all you afford?
Why do the peasants bleed in my streets? Tell me who's the king that governs these dirty streets?
"Face to face and eye to eye I see the faces you try to hide. Face to face and eye to eye Step from the shadows and into the light" -- Mirror, Mirror, how do you sleep? Your reflection ain't that deep Mirror, Mirror, how you lied Made me a pawn in the chess of life. -- I have no scepter. I have no crown. Stripped of all but love I wait... For the judge to call me down,
"Face to face and eye to eye I see the faces you try to hide. Face to face and eye to eye Step from the shadows and into the light"
Excerpts from Jason about the song. “This month ‘Mirror, Mirror’ begins it’s accent back into the playlist at the shows. In Middleville I played this song with Jason Lanning and Dave French for the first time in three years. For some unknown reason, I’ve been hesitant to play it. But after listening to it and hearing feedback, I wanted to give it back to those who want it live.” “This songs fits for the month. As much as I want to know what going to happen in my life musically, I need to understand that my life isn’t about always having the right answer. It’s about continually asking question, sometimes those I don’t want to know the answer to. It’s searching for knowledge and passing it on. Sometimes I’m the gypsy, dancing from one town to another. Sometimes I’m the poor man, looking at what I’ve been handed. Sometimes I’m the king. And, sometimes I’m the mirror.”
Lake Fx Radio Lake FX Radio is continuing to be a great asset and catalyst in Jason’s success. You can request any song off the cd. Listen to Lake FX radio on the web and add to the message board @ http://LakeFXRadio.com
Merchandise Cd’s ($10) and Long Sleeve Shirts ($15) are available at each live show. Once our Tech Guy’s computer is returned to him, copy of the DVD from Jason's show and interview with GRTV will also be available.
Personal Emails Your questions, comments and how your family dog is are great conversations. Thanks for continuing to write in with where you are and how you’ve been.
