Newbies So many new friends and fans of the music; this is great. Without you signing up to experience the AfterLife, the leaps made from previous years to now would be nullified. January 27, 1998 was Jason’s first show ever @ Four Friends Coffee shop in Grand Rapids, and now here we are; geared up to travel the country.
Opportunities These last few months have created great opportunities. From GRTV, to Celebration on the Grand, playing live on WLAV with Toni Gates to opening for Brian VanderArk of the Verve Pipe: it has been 6 years since we began. And, as in life, if we continue to look at where we were and where we are now, it’s one step back (sometimes two), but at the end of the day we see forward motion. Here, we see personal growth and personal success. It all depends on what you use for your measuring stick: what others want for you – or what you want for you.
Living on the Road “Baltimore, 3am. I’ve just finished a drink at “The Horse You Came in On” saloon and have retired to my Subaru for the evening, when a man, disheveled and looking homeless knocks on the window of my car. He says, “How about the money you were going to give me when you were done at the restaurant?” I offered him nothing but luck and thought, ‘Either this guy is delusional or this is the scam he uses to get money from strangers’. With him on his way, and I in my sleeping bag stretched out with Mercedes in the back, I spend my first night in my car; a sight that will be seen more than once before this first tour is over.” Actually, “Life on the Road” is not a correct statement. As of today, the longest stint Jason has been on is two weeks; this from Michigan to North Carolina, up to New York and one date in Connecticut. The greatest reward for all of this: the awesome people. There aren’t hundreds of people @ each venue by any means, but cherished are those who stay for the whole show, then hang out afterwards. And the hotels…..wow! It is so easy to stay up until 4am watching SpongeBob or VH1 Classics with ‘Glass Tiger’, when you don’t have cable at home. So at this point, we wouldn’t say Jason is “living on the road” just yet. How about “Visiting the road?” New York What a great town. It’s huge and the people are very friendly……Friendly meaning people you say, “Hello,” to on the street either ignore you, grunt their hello, or stop to have a conversation and ask you for money for the “Children International Foundation”. Oh yeah. Our ‘tech guy’ had his computer stolen in Manhattan. Son of a B!tch! Hopefully, a new computer will be delivered this week and AfterNine, the business, will surpass this setback.
Agent It’s amazing the risks involved with an agent. While on the road, 3 shows were cancelled (including the Democratic Rally – due to hurricane Ivan), 2 were picked up, and AfterNine was paid for the cancelled shows, due to language in the contract. It can be nerve-racking at times when the hotel has held $100 on the credit card and we’re calling the agent asking for 30 dollars in the bank account for gas money. It’s hectic sometimes, but it’s an eye- opener to react to all the new experiences that come our way.
Lake Fx Radio Lake FX Radio is continuing to be a great asset and catalyst in Jason’s success. Not only are they continuing to rotate Jason daily, on October in the 12th, Jason will be recording with DJ Nikkolys @ Night for that evening’s show. This will include an interview, and a CD spotlight where Jason gets to talk about all of the meaning behind the songs. Thank you to all of you who have put messages on the Lake FX Message Board, please continue to make requests. You can request any song off the cd. Listen to Lake FX radio on the web and add to the message board @ http://LakeFXRadio.com
Merchandise T-Shirts are now available at each live show for $12. A copy of the DVD from Jason's show and interview with GRTV would be available now, but was in the computer bag when it was stolen. It will be available soon, once the insurance company comes through for the stolen computer.
Personal Emails Thank you for all the personal emails that have come in regarding questions on cancellations, life after a steady paycheck, and general friendship-type stuff. All of your emails will be returned. If you have not received a response, we apologize. You may have been the one we missed. It is the personal emails that keep AfterNine alive when shows cancel or things don't go quite the way they were supposed to.
Song Spotlight ”This is a heart breaker. With my computer stolen, I do not have access to all of my songs, but plan to continue this section next month. If there is a song you’d like to have explained please email me personally (Jason@afterninerocks.com) or simply reply to The AfterLife.”
That's it. That's the AfterLife
